    While filming a segment for Top Gear at the former RAF Elvington airfield near York, 20th September 2006, Hammond was injured in the crash of the jet powered car drove off. Hammond was driving at 288 mph (463 km / h) at the time of the accident.

    His vehicle, a dragster called the Vampire, it is theoretically possible to travel at speeds up to 370 mph (595 kph). The vehicle was the same car that in 2000, driven by Colin Fallows, the British record speed record 300.3 (mph 483.3 km / h). The Vampire was operated by a single Bristol Siddeley Orpheus turbojet afterburner OUTPUT 10,000 hp (7.5 MW).

    Hammond made a full recovery from the accident and was able to join the presentation team.
